Item Description

Research confirms the importance of nutrition both before conception and during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Studies show that Folic Acid supplementation is especially important in the pre-conception period and the first trimester of pregnancy to ensure normal cell division and spinal cord development, and to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Zinc is another essential nutrient to encourage foetal development and growth. Studies show that Zinc deficiency in pregnant women can directly inhibit the immune system of their offspring. Iron requirements increase during the second trimester due to a rise in the overall volume of maternal blood and because of the needs of the growing baby. Foetal Iron deficiency can cause eye defects, growth retardation, bone and brain defects and even death. Calcium is necessary for the development of strong bones and teeth, for proper nerve and muscle function and growth. If sufficient Calcium is not supplied it is literally taken from the mother’s bones and given to the foetus.
